Town Life

What a town does while you are standing in it: buffers by the gatekeeper, shops along the streets, and a chat channel that is carrying real traffic.

Getting buffed

.buffme, or .buff. Optionally .buffme mage or .buffme fighter to override the split — with no argument it reads your class.

Where it works:

  • In town, standing by the gatekeeper. That is where the buffers gather. Being inside the town boundary is not enough; you have to be at the stand.
  • In the field, from a lone buffer. A single unpartied buffer will help you.

It deliberately will not pull a buffer out of a party that is earning XP. The refusal says so:

[buffme] no solo buffer here. .buffme works in town (stand by the gatekeeper's buffers), or from a lone buffer in the field — it won't pull you into a party.

You cannot already be in a party

The buffers form their own short-lived party to cast on you, then release. So:

[buffme] leave your current party first — the buffers form their own party to buff you.

Ask again too soon and it tells you how long is left:

[buffme] just buffed you — ask again in 41s to refresh your fighter buffs.

Which buffs you get depends on who is standing there. A town whose stand happens to hold a Shillien Elder, a Warcryer and a Bladedancer gives you a different suite from one that does not — the stand is whoever is there, not a fixed menu.

The chat channels

Town chat is not decoration. Every register reads something that already exists in the world.

Channel What it carries
Say Local texture — greetings, two-sim exchanges
Trade WTS and WTB from shops holding, or wanting, those goods
Shout Casual chatter and lfg, weighted by town so hubs are busy and villages are quiet

An lfg shout names the zone the sim is heading to, with its class and level. It used to name the nearest town instead, which put a sim hunting Elven Ruins under a “Talking Island Town” banner.

You can reply. A private message to a sim used to bounce with Player is in offline mode — every sim is clientless, the same way a real offline shop is — and it no longer does. Message a shop and it tells you where it is standing. See Shops and trade.

Who is standing around

Sims are not scenery and they are not scheduled. A zone comes alive when a real player enters it: parties start forming, shops start stocking. Then it stays lived-in.

.nearby (or .whois) lists invitable sims within 1,500 units, with an Invite button each on the dashboard.

What to look out for

You see Why it’s suspect
.buffme says no buffer nearby, in town You are in the town but not at the gatekeeper stand
A buffer stands inside a wall or on the wrong side of a building A placement defect — it will not be able to reach you
The same buff cast twice at once by two buffers Two buffers in one party should divide the suite, not duplicate it
A town stand with nobody above the low levels The stand is whoever is there. High-level buffers should turn up at bigger hubs
An lfg naming the town rather than a hunting zone The zone slot is the destination
A trade shout for a good no shop is carrying The shouts are meant to be grounded in real stock
